CARLSBAD: Brush Fire, Fireworks Suspected 7/04/13

Firefighters from Encinitas and Carlsbad responded Thursday afternoon to the report of a brush fire that started approximately at 3:15 in an open field near the footbridge on Calle Barcelona (2200 block of Calle Barcelona). The sheriff helicopter ASTREA was first on scene and helped guide crews to the fire.

Luckily, the fire was in a field on small shrubs and fire crews were able to make a quick attack on the spread of the flames. The fire was on property that the San Dieguito Union High School District owns. It looked like abandoned garden/outdoor area that once were used for education.

The field is surrounded by homes so it was imperative that the flames were stopped before they reached the houses. Carlsbad Battalion Chief Mike Calderwood estimated the fire to less than two acres.

Preliminary scanner traffic revealed that the fire started from fireworks from nearby houses. The cause of the fire is under investigation, however police will be looking into whether or not fireworks played a part in it.
